Is there a next level to our suburban garden plot?
Starting from just a few sad tomato plants, we have grown our garden to many raised beds of leafy greens, squash, eggplants, and more!
While we have enjoyed our beautiful harvests, it was hard work and has progressively become a greater battle against weeds, bugs, and weather with each passing year.
We believe permaculture is the next best step for our family garden. Join us in our new adventures to learn about regenerative agriculture, sustainable living, and seeking harmony with nature.

Sustainable living in an urban setting. Come grow with us!
Biodiversity is key to permaculture (to mimic nature). Given our USDA growing zone (Zone 5) and limited land space, we have some challenges to to overcome. We’ll need to experiment, which will take time and resources. Let us do the leg work and share with you what does and doesn’t work!

Plant Roles in a Guild
In Nature, every plant has a unique role to play in building a complex web of life that lives in harmony with each other.
Nitrogen-Fixers
Nature’s plant fertilizers
- Usually in the legume family.
- Works symbiotically with bacteria hosted in specialized root nodules.
- Captures atmospheric nitrogen, fixing it into the soil for other plants to use.
Mulchers
Plants that naturally cover and nurture soil
- Comfrey is a great example of a mulcher! It’s large, nutritious leaves shed, landing on the ground.
- Healthy soil is key to life – and keeping it covered protects it from sun, wind, and erosion.
Mineral Miners
Dredge up minerals from deep in the earth
- Comfrey uses its deep tap root to access minerals unavailable in the upper soil layers.
- When the plant decomposes, those vital minerals are made available to other plants at the surface.
Ground Cover
No more bare soil!
- Protects soil from erosion and drying out.
- Smothers weeds.
- Some ground cover can even tolerate foot traffic!
Insectary
Attracts beneficial insects
- Supports a healthy population of predatory insects (that eat pests like aphids).
- Insectary plants usually sport attractive flowers for the garden.
Anchors
The centerpiece of every guild!
- The focal point that other plants grow around.
- Can also provide a support structure for other plants to grow on – such as beans growing up corn stalks.

Every plant has its place in the garden, but some plants are just amazing!
